This week is the debut of a whole new season. The fresh smell of football in the air has returned and it's time to kickoff a brand new year of high school football!
LHS returns to action this week to begin their 2017 season at home against the Monroe Area Hurricanes. Monroe is coached by brand new head coach Kevin Reach replacing Joey Sulkowski. Monroe is coming off a disappointing 3-7 season (2-3 in region play) ,in which, they were blown out in each loss including a 30-7 defeating by the Red Devils to start the year exactly one year ago. While no longer in the same region as LHS, (Region 8AAA) Monroe is still considered a major cross town rival to the Red Devils. In the overall series, LHS has won 9 out of the 11 games they have played, only losing in the rebuilding years of 2012 and 2013 respectively. Last year Monroe struggled to put points on the board only putting up 143 compared to allowing 243 to the opponents. Monroe was weak all around on both sides of the ball but they have a couple of players I would like to keep my eyes on.
Wide Recievers Jayden Brandon (now a senior) and Jakia Thompson (now a junior) carried the load on offense averaging just around 22.9 yards and 20.4 yards per play respectively. I want to see if the Red Devils defense can cover those two and prevent Monroe from spreading them out in the open for big plays. Judging by the score last year, they did excellent in doing that but this year is a new year and new tricks can be learned. I don't see Monroe being able to shut down Loganville's senior lead defense and I think they will have a difficult time finding space in the defense.
Overall, I don't think LHS will be quite as dominant as they were in 2016 against Monroe due to the losses of Cameron Perkins, Shy Kim and Daryl Giles Jr. but I still have LHS winning by at least a couple touchdowns, I'll say 21-7 should be a reasonable score to go with as I believe LHS will take their first win of the brand new season at Red Devil Stadium on Alumni night.
Hope you guys enjoyed my first "Gameday Blog" of the season here in "Pemberton's Place" and I look forward to a great year of LHS Football!
Go Red Devils!
